Beat Seasonal Depression With Balance

I recall my own days with seasonal depression. Creating balance and healing the last 9.5 years got rid of depression for me. Now I start to teach my members up north in August to prep ahead of time for the dark months. Lack of sunshine truly impacts your mood and emotional body. Now that I am living in FL, I am grateful for the sun. I also can feel the energetic difference in moods of those in northern states compared to southern states. Balance is important on so many levels. Its a lifestyle, choice and daily acts within your body, mind and spirit to help you maintain it once you create it.

As winter draws nearer, seasonal depression or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) can affect many people.

The cold and gloomy weather coupled with the shorter days can lead to feelings of sadness, loneliness, and hopelessness in many people.

Fortunately, there is a lot that you can do to reduce and manage the symptoms of SAD. Rather than supress, avoid, and escape the reality, why not have accountability and take action to help heal from it.

In this blog, we discuss recent news and tips that can help you deal with seasonal depression during winter months.

Seasonal Depression and the Weather

As stated by NPR, daylight saving time ends in winter, making it the perfect time for seasonal depression to set in. As winter moves in and the days grow darker, stress levels often increase, leading to feelings of depression. However, new research suggests that sunlight can help reduce the risk of seasonal depression. According to Dr. Elena Ivanova, a researcher at the University of Bristol, "the more sunlight there is, the less likely people are to get depressed, compared to the dark months."

Lifestyle Changes to Regulate Mood

Making adjustments to your lifestyle can also help manage SAD symptoms. A recent article by The Atlantic suggests that increased physical activity such as yoga, swimming, and meditation can help regulate mood. Moreover, spending time in nature, whether it be walking, hiking, or simply sitting in the park, can make a difference. Traditional talk therapy can also be beneficial for seasonal depression as it provides a safe space to talk about feelings.

Light Therapy

Light therapy has been found to be very effective in treating SAD. A recent article by Medical News Today discusses how exposure to bright light, among other things, can be an effective way to reduce the symptoms of SAD. During light therapy, individuals expose themselves to a bright lightbox every day to mimic the natural light that is missing during winter. This intervention can reduce melatonin levels, improving mood or crystal light sound therapy.

How Bioenergetics Can help with Seasonal Depression

As mentioned in the article from NES Health, bioenergetics can also play a role in combating seasonal depression.

Here are a few ways bioenergetics can be beneficial in combating seasonal depression:

Energy Healing Techniques: Some Bioenergetic practitioners utilize various energy healing techniques, such as Reiki and acupuncture, to restore the flow of energy throughout the body. These techniques can help release blockages and promote relaxation, reducing symptoms of depression and improving overall mood.Chakra Balancing: Bioenergetics emphasizes the importance of balancing the body's energy centers, known as chakras. Each chakra is associated with different aspects of our physical and emotional well-being. By assessing and rebalancing these energy centers, bioenergetic practitioners can address specific emotional imbalances that contribute to seasonal depression.Emotional Release: Seasonal depression is often accompanied by unresolved emotions and past traumas. Bioenergetic approaches can help individuals release stored emotions and trauma from the body, allowing for emotional healing and improved mental well-being.Mindfulness and Meditation: Bioenergetics encourages the practice of mindfulness and meditation as a means to connect with the present moment and cultivate self-awareness. These practices can help individuals recognize negative thought patterns and cultivate a more positive mental outlook, ultimately reducing symptoms of seasonal depression.

Seasonal depression can be challenging but taking the time to be proactive about managing your symptoms can significantly improve your quality of life. There are many strategies to use, from increasing exposure to sunlight and physical activity to considering light therapy.
